Public Meeting Regarding New Surgery Development

On the 4th March 2008 a meeting was held at Abersychan Surgery in which Torfaen Local health Board and Assura Property presented options for the development of new surgery premises. This meeting was well attended and we look forward to reviewing the feedback.

At present the most like site for the new surgery will be on our current Abersychan Surgery site.

New Primary Care Centre for Abersychan

The 1946 NHS Act was passed through Parliament to “establish a comprehensive health service designed to secure improvement in the physical and mental health of the people of England and Wales and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness”.

Since the beginning of the NHS service in Wales , Abersychan has had a General Practitioner practicing in the village. Dr MacQuillan was the first to establish a surgery close to the site of the current Abersychan Practice. Dr Dare joined Dr MacQuillan as a partner. Subsequently Drs Pugh and Davies joined Dr Dare to establish the nucleus that has now developed into the "Abersychan Practice". Initially the partnership had it’s surgery in Old Police Station in Abersychan before we moving to the present site

As both Abersychan and the medical profession changed and grew new GPs joined the practice and in July 1985 our current building opened with 5 GPs working from the new surgery.  Over the years the building has been extended to accommodate more doctors and staff to provide a range of services for the patients of the practice.

As a partnership we want to continue this tradition, to make full use of the advances in technology and medicine whilst keeping the original vision of our NHS in mind.

Our current surgery has served us well for the past 20 years but, as many of you will know, we are very short of space, particularly in the waiting room, and we, together with Torfaen Local Health Board, have taken the decision that it is time for us to move to a new purpose built surgery which will give us the space we need to continue to provide the service but will also allow us to grow and adapt to the changing needs of our patients.  To help us to achieve this, the Practice and the Local Health Board have appointed a specialist healthcare developer, Assura Property, to work with us to build our new Primary Care Centre.  Torfaen Borough Council have also been very proactive  and encouraging in helping us to find a site for the new surgery.  It is important to us to try and keep the practice within the village.

Any further information about this important development will be posted here
