The MRCGP Video Component

This is the latest component to be added to the MRCGP exam. Videos also form part of summative assessment. Trainees often find videos of their consultations intimidating. Therefore I anticipate that this part of the examination may turn out to be the least popular with exam candidates.

What are the examiners looking for?

Both clinical and consulting skills are being measured. But most of the emphasis is on consulting skills. Read the booklet containing details of the areas being tested. Practice looking through these areas at an early stage with your trainer.

Preparation:

  1. Good sound quality, both patient and doctor can be heard, watch out for noisy printers and other background noises
  2. Make sure that the time and date are recorded on the tape
  3. You need to submit a 4 hour VHS tape, most camcorders use a smaller tape and so the consultations will need to be copied on to a VHS tape
  4. You can edit out consultations that you are not happy with.
  5. Record that tapes at normal speed.
  6. May need use a wide angle lens.
